NLNG Shops For New Vessels, Amid Supply Shortfalls

The Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) may have begun to shop for new eco-friendly vessels from shipyards globally.

NLNG had earlier disclosed its plans to expand its fleets, get modern ships and reduce emission in line with its objectives.

SlyeNews gathered that the LNG giant (NLNG) has been checking out shipyard slots for LNG carrier newbuildings, which could fit into its specifications for fleet expansion.

Yards in South Korea and China are competing to win an order to build liquefied natural gas carriers for LNG producer Nigeria LNG, shipbuilding sources told LNG Prime.

General Manager of Production, NLNG, Nnamdi Anowi, earlier at the 2024 World LNG Summit and Awards, n Berlin, Germany, said: “We are making significant strides in our shipping operations. Over the next 10 years, we aim to transition from our current steam-powered vessels to modern ships.

“Earlier this year (2024), we took a major step by entering into a long-term chapter of our first modern ship Aktoras, and we are already planning to acquire a second ship next year,” he said.

Meanwhile, attacks on pipelines has hampered the operations of the company, plummeting its by a staggering 80 percent.

Recent report by Bloomberg had noted that the required gas supply has dropped by 80 per cent and only 20 per cent of the company’s needs are being met by available facilities.

The report quoted the Chief Executive Officer, NLNG, Philip Mshelbila as saying only two of the facility’s six processing units are currently functional, and three gas pipelines are down.

“In the current moment, I am only running two trains out of six,” Mshelbila lamented at a panel session during this year’s Nigeria International Energy Summit.
