FG empowers 870 youths on entrepreneurship in South-West

The Federal Government says it has through the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) programme empowered 870 youths in South-West as part of its efforts to eradicate poverty in the country. 

 

The Chairman, Board of SMEDAN, Mr Femi Pedro, also the Former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, made the disclosure during the SMEDAN National Annual Skills Development Initiative on in Lagos. 

 

Pedro said that the programme was an initiative of government aimed at providing funds to assist women and youths adopt special skills to become self employed and for improved standards of living.

 

He listed some of the special skills to include fashion designing, cassava processing, and solar panel installation as an alternative power source to the public power supply currently used in the country. 

 

The SMEDAN chairman revealed that 870 youth would be trained in South-West, adding that 145 of the 870 youths were been trained in Lagos.

 

“We lack the skills, manpower on how to install solar panel, and the agency by taking it up to train the youths, would bring down the price and create new level of entrepreneurs.

 

“We are also training people on cassava processing and any body who could learn this with the little equipment from government can start something on casava processing because food is a necessity.

 

“Simultaneously, as we are training youths in Lagos, we are also doing that in all the states under the South-West zone, 

 

“We have covered the northern part of Nigeria and very soon, we are going to South-East and after that South- South until we cover the whole country. 

 

“After undergone the whole process, participants would be given free equipment and take off grant to all the 870 participants in South – West ‘to make engender self reliance and employment generation,” he said.

 

Also, the Commissioner for Wealth Creation, Lagos State, Mrs Yetunde Arobieke, urged the 145 lucky youths in the state to embrace the opportunity to enable both the Federal and state government succeed in eradicating poverty in the country. 

 

Arobieke, represented by Mrs Taiwo Abiose, Director, Entrepreneurship, Lagos State Ministry of Wealth Creation, said that the Lagos State Government had established a 10 per cent interest loan with the Lagos State Employment Trust Found (LSETF). 

 

She said that the loan was available with the support of the State Government to support women and youth to become entrepreneurs and drive industrialisation in the state.

 

Director General, SMEDAN, Dr Dikko Radda, said that the programme was aimed at filling the capacity gap of the teeming Nigerian youth.

 

Radda, represented by Director Enterprise Development and Promotion of SMEDAN, Mr Monday Ewans, added that the initiative would enhance youths engagement in productive ventures, thereby ensuring their ability to earn under the artisan sector in Nigeria. 

 

“I urge the youths to tap all the knowledge and apply it in their business which would go a long way in creating wealth and eradicating poverty in the society. 

 

“Some of the participants who have under gone the training have sold off their equipment that is while am appealing to the selected and fortunate youths present today to use the money in running their business which will help them to be an employers of labour. 

 

“The programme is being implemented in all states of the Federation and Federal Capital Territory where a total of 5,365 entrepreneurs will be impacted with entrepreneurship skills, vocational skills and empowerment materials at the rate of 145 entrepreneurs per state and FCT,” he said.
