The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced the seizure of two containers filled with unregistered pharmaceutical products and psychotropic substances worth over N4.1 billion.

Parading the drugs before media men in Lagos, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, noted that investigations are ongoing, adding that those involved in these illicit activities will face legal consequences.

Adeniyi highlighted the growing challenge posed by criminal networks that attempt to bypass security measures and engage in the trafficking of illicit substances, arms, ammunition, illegal wildlife, and petroleum products.

He noted that these activities not only undermine national security but also pose severe risks to public health and societal stability.

Among the substances seized were significant quantities of Cannabis Indica and codeine-laden cough syrup, both of which are known for their detrimental impact on society.

 Cannabis Indica, concealed in 3 plastic drums and 46 bags, weighed a total of 1,072 kilograms and was estimated to have a street value of N3.2 billion. Additionally, 877 cartons of Barcadin cough syrup containing codeine and 82 cartons of Really Extra Diclofenac Sodium tablets were confiscated. These items, imported from India, had an estimated value of N964 million.

Adeniyi emphasized that the Federal Government iscommitted to stabilizing the economy and ensuring the well-being of its citizens, adding that, the NCS plays a crucial role in this effort, not only through revenue collection but also by preventing the entry of harmful substances into Nigerian communities.

The Customs boss praised the collaborative efforts between the NCS and the Nigeria Drug and Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), which have been instrumental in achieving these successful seizures. He reiterated the importance of resource and intelligence sharing among agencies to enhance the effectiveness of border security operations.

He said the recent operation by the Tincan Command of the NCS underscores the evolving tactics of smugglers but also demonstrates the NCS’s vigilance and capability in intercepting illegal goods.

Adeniyi concluded the press conference by urging Nigerians to continue their legitimate business activities, assuring them of the NCS’s dedication to easing challenges and protecting the nation’s economic and social stability. He called for continued public support in the fight against smuggling and other illegal activities.

He said the NCS remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard Nigeria’s borders and ensure a prosperous and secure environment for all citizens.
