Nine Passengers Crushed To Death As Container Falls On Bus In Lagos
No fewer than nine passengers, inclusive of two children, died when a container fell on a commercial bus at Ojuelegba area of Lagos today (Sunday).
This is less than a month after a container-laden truck killed one person on the Apapa-Oshodi expressway.
Confirming the accident to SlyeNews, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said seven adults and two children died on the spot in the accident that occurred about 1.00 p.m.
He gave the casualty figure as; 4 adult males, 3 adult females, 1 boy child and 1 girl child.
He said: “We found that a truck conveying a 20ft container has landed on top of a commercial bus.
“Further investigations revealed that the bus was picking up passengers when the truck driver lost control and fell over them.
“After suspending the container with the aid of the Agency’s forklift and cutting off the bus’ rooftop, we rescued one woman alive.
“We have taken her to the trauma centre,” the LASEMA boss said.
He added that Nigeria Police will conduct further investigation into the accident.
Oke-Osanyintolu pointed out that there was need to remove the barriers on the bridge in order “to prevent trucks from ascending”.
“The Agency’s heavy duty Goliath and teams from Onipan and Cappa are on ground. The Agency’s Ambulance, LASG FIRE, FED FIRE, LASTMA and Nigeria Police have been working on this situation which is now concluded,” he said.
