NLNG vessels lift 400 cargoes yearly

By Eniola Idris
The Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) vessels operated by its subsidiary NLNG Ship Management Limited (NSML), currently ships about 400 cargoes across the world yearly.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of NLNG Ship Management Limited, Abdul-Kadir K. Ahmed in an interactive session with Journalists in Lagos, said the company delivers this feat with qualified Nigerian seafarers in line with international standards.
The cargoes, according to him are shipped to United States of America, Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia-Pacific countries.
He said the NMSL delivered the cargo through its 11 LNG vessels and one Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) vessel, with about 700 Nigerians manning them.
Ahmed said the company is determined to build local capacity and secure reputable place for Nigeria in the comity of maritime nations.
He said the company has commenced arrangements with NIMASA to ensure that the nation builds the regulatory capacity so that Nigerian flag can be accepted internationally.
Ahmed
The establishment of its Maritime Centre of Excellence in Bonny Island, and provision of opportunity for sea time on board ships, he said would buoy the capacity of local seafarers.
Describing NSML as the largest employer of seafarers in Nigeria, he said the ‘Nigerianisation’ of agenda of the company is targeting 100 per cent by 2022 and it is currently at 83 per cent.
“100 per cent of the ratings on board our vessel are Nigerians and more than 60 per cent of officers on those vessels are Nigerians,” he said.
However, Ahmed said the company is still vigorously pursuing its Clean Water Initiative  (CLI) campaign to reduce the effects of plastics, debris and other maritime litters on the Nigerian waterways.
He said plans are underway to further implement and expand the ideals of the campaign in the coming years.
The NMSL a document made available to SlyeNews said the initiative centres/focuses on “actions, advocacy and public awareness campaign to tackle the devastating effects of plastics, debris, litters on the aquatic ecosystem; and their overall impact on the global maritime environment. It is also an integral part of NSML’s corporate Brand Management Plan activities.
“The initial areas/scope of coverage will be NSML’s primary areas of operation (AOP)– The NLNG Terminal in Bonny, as well as the ISB/OSB Jetty in Port-Harcourt.
“The plan is to ensure the proper clean-up and maintenance of the waterways at these AOPs; whilst extending the initiative in subsequent years to the inland waterways in Rivers State; and subsequently the national space.
“The initiative was launched to celebrate the IMO 2020 World Maritime Day, in September 2020, in line with the theme of the event – “Sustainable Shipping for a Sustainable Planet”-. The NSML Terminal Services team kick started the campaign by organising a clean-up exercise of the NLNG Bonny waterfront and it was a huge success”.
