The Council Chairman of University of Ibadan (UI), Nde Joshua Waklek, has suspended the selection process of the new Vice Chancellor (VC) for the premier university.
SlyNews gathered that the suspension was as a result of protest that broke out during the selection process on Wednesday.
The Council will be meeting with the aggrieved unions on Friday.
Waklek stated this when he came to address the protesters, which comprised of the unions in UI on the alleged imposition of a preferred candidate.
Chairman of SSANU, Wale Akinremi, who confirmed the development said: “The selection process has been suspended for now until all the issues raised in the appointment of the new VC is addressed.
The Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) demanded that the VC should be on terminal leave by now and cannot preside over the selection of his successor.
The two academic unions disrupted the council meeting on further screening of six shortlisted candidates for UI VC, while the outgoing VC booed out of meeting.
The unions alleged plans to impose the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Kayode Adebowale as the next VC.
The unions besieged the Council Chamber when they got feelers that Adebowale was surprisingly leading other contestants in the scoring process.
Unions presented a 7- point demand to Council Chairman including payment of outstanding promotion arrears, illegal pension deduction, leave bonus, suspension of the selection process of VC amongst others.
